Become A Certified Soccer Referee

Are you interested in becoming a soccer referee?

You can become a sanctioned U.S. Soccer referee, certified through the Missouri Referee Development Program!

If you live in Kansas, you can certify through the Kansas Referee Development Program!

Certification through these programs will allow you to be assigned to any game as a referee or an assistant referee in all youth and/or adult games sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation.

You can live in either state and register for whichever referee program you prefer although it may depend on where you can get a class.

Participants must register online and complete the subsequent online session & test before attending the in-person class.

Registering for Course

  • Complete New Member Registration
  • After registering, select Outdoor Entry Referee Online Lessons
  • Pay one-time fee to gain access to 25 online training modules
  • After completing online modules, select Pick A Clinic

Selecting a clinic reserves your spot to attend both the classroom and field sessions at Central Bank Sporting Complex. All 25 online modules must be completed before selecting an in-person clinic.

What should I bring to the class?

For the In-Person Class, you will need:

  • Water bottle
  • Lunch
  • Tennis shoes
  • Notebook & pen or pencil
  • Whistle (preferably Fox 40 brand)
  • Referee flags (optional)

How can I find local refereeing opportunities?

Sporting KC is always looking for referees for our youth soccer programs!

Is there an age requirement?

Yes, you must be at least 13 years of age to enroll in a referee education course. Most local leagues also mandate a minimum age for refs, so make sure you check the position requirements for any assignment if you are under 18.

If I receive my referee certification in a specific state, will I be able to work games in other states?

Yes! As a certified referee, you can choose to work any sanctioned game you’d like, even if it is outside of the state of your certification.
