Sporting KC hosts 164 teams from 11 states at the 2022 Sporting Classic Tournament

On August 26-28, Sporting Kansas City Youth Soccer hosted 164 teams from 11 states throughout the Midwest, the largest Sporting Classic tournament to date.

During the three-day event, nearly 300 matches were played across three venues: Compass Minerals Sporting Fields, Swope Soccer Village and Compass Minerals National Peformance Center.

Open to Boys & Girls teams, U9 (2014) through U14/15 (2008), the top teams from each of the 32 divisions moved on to the finals on Sunday, competing for a trophy and Sporting Classic honors.

Out of the 64 teams that advanced to a final match, 48 were Sporting Kansas City Academy Affiliates.

“I’m very appreciative to all of the families and teams that made the trip to play in this year’s Classic,” said Alec Smith, Sporting KC Youth Manager of Competitions. “It was a great event. I’m so glad so many players got the chance to develop their skills and to make new memories with Sporting.”

Sporting Classic players and their families also had the opportunity to cheer on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening as Sporting defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 at Children’s Mercy Park.

The excitement continued Sunday when Sporting KC goalkeeper John Pulskamp and defender Kayden Pierre stopped by Compass Mineral Sporting Fields to take photos and sign autographs for players.

Dates and registration information for next year’s Sporting Classic will be announced in the coming months.
