SKC Academy Affiliate Team GA Cup Recap

Last month over Thanksgiving weekend, the U12 SKC Academy and a SKC Academy Affiliate team competed in the 2019 Generation adidas Cup. The annual elite youth soccer tournament was held at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta, GA this year.

The SKC Affiliate team was consisted of a mix of full-time SKC Academy players, six Academy Affiliate players and guest players from various clubs. The 6 Academy Affiliate players who were hand-selected by SKC Academy coaches from our SKC Academy Regional Pool program were Baron Williams (Sporting Blue Valley), Mason McKnight (Sporting Iowa), Luke Butler (Sporting Springfield), Jack Francka (Sporting Missouri Valley), Tayln Gates (Sporting Missouri Valley) and Alex Gemeinhardt (Sporting Missouri Valley).

The SKC Academy Affiliate team played a total of 6 games throughout the weekend; 2 on Friday, 3 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.  This unique tournament focuses on player development which was mirrored in the format of the event: 7v7 with two 15 minute halves. The GA Cup SKC Academy Affiliate team bracket consisted of competition from major MLS clubs such as Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids, and Toronto FC.

  • SKC Affiliate (1) vs. Real Salt Lake-Southern Arizona (0)

Quarter Final

  • SKC Affiliate (3) vs. Michigan Wolves (1)

Semi Final

  • SKC Affiliate (1) vs. Houston Dynamo Catalyst Program (3)

Third Place Game

  • SKC Affiliate (0) vs. DC United (D.M.C.) Pathway to Pro (4)

 

Overall, the SKC Academy Affiliate team finished 4th out of 16 teams made up from the MLS affiliate bracket.

This event helps reiterate one of our goals as an organization; to strive to provide more of these unique opportunities to our Affiliates to enhance and further individual player development. As we hope for more experiences like these in the future, we once again would like to express how extremely proud we are to see our Affiliate players represent the Sporting brand and their respective clubs so well at one of the highest levels over the weekend. Congrats to the boys who competed and their tournament success and good luck to them and their respective clubs going forward!
